What we do

The Road to Recovery Trust is a charitable organisation based in Newcastle upon Tyne, dedicated to supporting individuals in overcoming addiction, including substance use disorders, alcohol dependency, and behavioural addictions. The Trust provides safe and welcoming environments such as George Street Social, a recovery coffee shop designed to foster connection, mutual support, and access to essential recovery resources.

Our approach

Through a structured approach, we promote 12-step recovery principles, offering support groups and mutual aid networks to empower individuals in sustaining their recovery journey. Recovery Capital principles guide everything we do — tackling stigma, fostering an inclusive and compassionate community, and championing recovery as a positive, attainable path forward.

Our HQ, George Street Social, hosts 31 mutual aid meetings a week across 10 different 12-step fellowships, plus SMART Recovery, monthly Gam-Anon, and — new this year — Crystal Meth Anonymous on Saturday mornings. We work with over 80 local organisations, so anyone walking through our doors can connect with a wide range of services in one place: smoking cessation, volunteering support (Connected Voice), energy advice (Wise Group), employment guidance (Triage), financial wellbeing (CleanSlate), plus the Pop-up Library, PROPS, and Her Circle. A twice-weekly crèche means parents and carers can take part without barriers, alongside Fire and Rescue Safe and Well workshops, NHS App support, and gambling support from NECA.

Fully funded projects add creativity and wellbeing into everyday recovery: Zen Soundwaves, Wing Outdoor Activities, Recovery Rocks, yoga, CV and creative writing workshops, Sharing Circles, Relapse Prevention workshops, and community lunches.
